breeding philosophy

we share what we love

  • Breeding Healthy Bernese Mountain Dogs: Our primary goal is to breed Bernese Mountain Dogs that are free of hereditary illnesses and diseases as much as possible. Health clearances are a crucial step in our breeding decisions.

  • Comprehensive Testing: All our breeding stock undergoes extensive testing, including hip and elbow scoring, OCD screening, and DNA testing for DM exon 1 & 2 (Laboklin Lab), and at some dogs SH pretest (France, Antagene). Our main aim is to ensure longevity, health clearances, temperament, and genetic health.

  • Careful Selection of Breeding Pairs: We meticulously select each breeding pair to improve various genetic traits, either by strengthening desirable traits or eliminating negative ones. Our goal is to combine the best traits in a single individual and breed Bernese Mountain Dogs of correct type, character, and typical temperament—bright, social, and outgoing.

  • Appropriate BARF Diet: We rely on a BARF diet, consisting mostly of raw meat, raw bones, cooked grains (millet, buckwheat, rice), vegetables, and a few other raw items with a handful of supplements. This varied diet helps maintain appropriate weight, healthy teeth and breath, healthy skin and coat, reduced stool volume and odor, optimal immune system, and strong bones and muscle development. We believe a good combination of conventional and traditional care makes sense.
  • Promoting the Breed Responsibly: We are committed to promoting the Bernese Mountain Dog breed in a responsible manner.

  • Cooperating with Responsible Breeders: We collaborate with other responsible breeders to breed with a specific purpose and a plan for the future.

  • Treating Our Dogs as Family: Our dogs are not kennel dogs; they live as part of our family and participate in the show ring as well as in obedience training.

  • Ethical Breeding Practices: We do not breed solely for profit. Ethical and moral breeding practices are paramount, and breeding should not be considered a money-making venture.
